Flourish on 52nd

Flourish on 52nd is a community art initiative founded and curated by Sheena Garcia that celebrates the rich Black history, culture, and creative legacy of West Philadelphia's historic 52nd Street, affectionately known as "The Strip." Once home to legendary jazz clubs, theaters, and Black-owned businesses, the corridor welcomed iconic artists including Cab Calloway, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Betty Carter, George Benson, Roy Ayers, Teddy Pendergrass, Stevie Wonder, Moms Mabley, Thelonious Monk, and many others.

Independently conceived, curated, and produced by Garcia, the initiative brings together West Philadelphia older adults and longtime community residents to create original art memoir posters that preserve personal memories, neighborhood history, and cultural traditions. The completed works are first exhibited at Urban Art Gallery, through the support of founder Karl Morris, before being gifted to longtime business owners and installed in storefront windows throughout the 52nd Street corridor. Each poster features a QR code linking to an audio story recorded by its artist, creating a living archive of community voices.

Displayed in the storefront windows of local businesses, the exhibition transforms 52nd Street into a walkable, open-air gallery where art, history, and storytelling come together. Visitors are invited to explore the corridor, scan each poster, and experience the memories that continue to shape one of Philadelphia's most significant cultural landmarks.
